Formula

1 source = X destination
amount_dst = amount_src × rate
1 destination = X source
amount_dst = amount_src ÷ rate
  • Rate direction tells the calculator how to interpret the rate you entered.
  • The calculator does not fetch or store any exchange rate.
  • Results are fixed and based only on the values you provide.

How exchange-rate conversion works

A currency conversion multiplies an amount by a rate that expresses how much of one currency one unit of another currency is worth. The convention matters: '1 USD = 0.92 EUR' and '1 EUR = 1.087 USD' describe the same exchange relationship but use different numbers. The rate direction control lets you enter the rate exactly as you found it.

Exchange rates versus bank and card rates

Published exchange rates are usually mid-market reference rates. The rate a bank or card network actually applies often includes a margin or fee, so the amount you are charged may differ from a straight conversion. For accounting records, use the exact rate shown on your statement.

Currency conversion for invoices and travel

Common business uses include preparing invoices in a customer's currency, reconciling expenses from international travel, and comparing supplier quotes quoted in different currencies. Enter the rate that applies to your transaction for a result that matches your records.

Frequently asked questions

Does this converter use live exchange rates?
No. You enter the exchange rate yourself. This keeps the tool fully private, and lets you use a specific rate from your bank statement, invoice, or accounting record. This version never fetches rates from the internet.
Which rate direction should I pick?
Use '1 source = X destination' if your rate says one unit of the source currency buys X units of the destination currency (for example, 1 USD = 0.92 EUR). Use '1 destination = X source' if your rate is quoted the other way (for example, 1 EUR = 1.09 USD).
Why use a manual rate for accounting?
Companies often record invoices and expenses at a specific rate on the date a transaction occurred, not at today's live rate. Entering the rate manually gives you a fixed result that matches your books.
Are the converted amounts rounded?
Display is rounded to the destination currency's usual decimal places for readability, but the underlying value is not rounded. Very small or large results may show more precision.
Is this financial advice?
No. This is a general-purpose calculator. It is not financial, accounting, tax, legal, or business advice.
