Formula

Linear units
value_in_target = (value × fromFactor) ÷ toFactor
Celsius → Fahrenheit
F = C × 9/5 + 32
Fahrenheit → Celsius
C = (F − 32) × 5/9
Celsius → Kelvin
K = C + 273.15
  • Each category uses a single base unit; linear units convert via a multiplication factor to and from that base.
  • Temperature uses special formulas because the zero points of Celsius, Fahrenheit, and Kelvin do not line up.
  • Results are rounded for display only; the underlying value is not rounded.

Metric versus imperial

The metric system uses base-10 prefixes: milli-, centi-, kilo-, mega-, and so on. The imperial system uses units like inches, feet, pounds, and gallons with non-uniform relationships (12 inches per foot, 16 ounces per pound). Converting between the two requires the exact factors defined by international agreement, which this converter uses.

Common business unit conversions

Typical business uses include converting shipping weights between kilograms and pounds, package dimensions between millimeters and inches, liquid volumes between liters and gallons, and data storage between megabytes and gigabytes. Use the swap control to reverse any conversion without re-entering the value.

Frequently asked questions

Are these conversions exact?
Most metric-to-imperial conversions use internationally agreed exact factors (for example, 1 inch = 25.4 millimeters and 1 pound = 0.45359237 kilograms). Temperature conversions use the exact formulas. Results are rounded for display only.
How is temperature converted?
Celsius to Fahrenheit uses F = C × 9/5 + 32. Fahrenheit to Celsius uses C = (F − 32) × 5/9. Kelvin shifts from Celsius by 273.15: K = C + 273.15. Temperature is not a simple multiplication, so this converter applies the correct formulas rather than a ratio.
What is the difference between a kilobyte and a kibibyte?
A kilobyte (KB) is 1,000 bytes, while a kibibyte (KiB) is 1,024 bytes. Operating systems often count in groups of 1,024 while storage makers count in groups of 1,000, which is why a '500 GB' disk may show fewer GB in your computer.
Does the unit converter store my inputs?
No. Conversions run entirely in your browser. Inputs are not sent to WebF1 and are not stored on a server.
Why does the result sometimes show many decimal places?
The converter trims trailing zeros and limits significant figures for readability. Very large or very small results may be shown in exponential notation.
