• Percentage change is undefined when the original value is zero (division by zero).
• The denominator uses the absolute value of the original, so a change from −100 to 100 is a 200% increase.
• If discount percentage and discount amount conflict, the percentage is used.

Discounts in retail and sales

A discount reduces an original price by a percentage or a fixed amount. Percentage discounts are common in retail promotions; fixed-amount discounts appear in coupons and rebates. This calculator handles both and shows the final price and total savings.

Percentage change in business reporting

Percentage change is the standard way to describe growth or decline: revenue up 12% year over year, costs down 5%, headcount up 8%. It compares the difference between two values to the starting value. When the starting value is zero, percentage change is undefined and the absolute difference should be reported instead.
